Thank you to all residents who have contributed financially to our camera project.
We now have 4 cameras erected, functioning and recording. They are located in Howard Street, Lindsay Street, Fraser Street and DuthieAvenue. The fifth is scheduled for the junction of Marlin and Barracuda but we are still waiting for the municipality to approve an electrical connection. It may be necessary to change the location slightly to Hunters Retirement Centre to speed up the installation.
All locations were selected on the advice of SAPs and Allsound. A monitoring trial will begin shortly. The cameras will be monitored from 2200 until 0600 by the Allsound control room. 24-hour monitoring is impractical due to the amount of pedestrian traffic during the daytime. It is also prohibitively expensive.
We are negotiating with the Municipality for another 3 cameras. The funding will be from this year’s ward security budget. These cameras, when installed, will be on the same network as our initial 5 and will be monitored and recorded.
This is just the start. We intend to have many more cameras in our area to help combat crime. If all residents buy into our plan then the funding will be possible. As we said before, a long term solution is a small security levy on the rates to ensure everyone contributes.
We still need money now. Our fundraising continues. At present we have raised R35000 from residents, businesses and the gated estates in our area. We still need around R42000 just to cover the Allsound monitoring for a year
